When it comes to smartphones and download speeds, the term UMTS often appears. The abbreviation stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. In this practical tip, we'll tell you what exactly is behind it.
UMTS - what is it?
- UMTS is a mobile radio standard for the transmission of mobile data.
- UMTS belongs to the third generation of mobile radio standards and is therefore also referred to as 3G. Especially on the iPhone you will find the 3G symbol in the status bar at the top. An "H +" is displayed on Android.
- With a UMTS connection, you can achieve a maximum surfing speed of up to 42 Mbit / s on your smartphone. Unfortunately, the reality is different, as our 2014 CHIP network test shows.
How good is a UMTS connection?
- In addition to UMTS, there are other mobile radio standards. If your smartphone shows "GPRS" or "E" for Edge, you surf at a much lower speed than with UMTS.
- If your smartphone shows "H" for HSDPA or "4G" for LTE, you can surf with an Internet connection that is up to twice as fast.
- Which mobile phone standard you use is not decided by you or your smartphone, but by your location. Fast internet is not available everywhere and not every mobile phone contract allows the use of LTE.
