What is WiFi? Easily explained

In the past, the computer was connected to the Internet via LAN, but today WLAN or WiFi is mostly used for this. In this practical tip we explain to you exactly what that is and what you can use the function for.
Wireless Internet: What is WLAN / WiFi?
WLAN and WiFi are mostly used synonymously, but there are marginal differences:
- WLAN stands for "Wireless Local Area Network". Roughly translated, this means "wireless local area network". You can use WLAN to connect your end devices (e.g. laptops & smartphones) to the Internet without a cable.
- WiFi, on the other hand, is a label or a brand name. Devices marked with "Wireless Fidelity" (WiFi) are capable of receiving WLAN.
- However, these differences are less relevant for you as a user. Whether WLAN or WiFi - ultimately you can use both terms synonymously, because both stand for "wireless network" in German-speaking countries.
- Note, however, that the term "WLAN" is not used in most foreign-language countries, although it is borrowed from English. If you want to use WiFi abroad, use the term "WiFi".
What does WLAN / WiFi bring to the user?
- The most obvious benefit of WiFi is that you are not tied to a cable. With a laptop, for example, you can move freely around rooms and use the Internet without any problems.
- Some devices do not have a connection for a LAN cable. Smartphones or tablets are therefore dependent on WLAN / WiFi and mobile internet.
- Furthermore, in contrast to mobile data, WLAN is "free". The use of the WLAN is billed via the corresponding internet contract. WLAN does not cause any additional costs.
- The Internet of the mobile phone contract, however, is limited to a certain volume of data. If you are in the WLAN with your smartphone, this volume is not used up.
- In addition, WiFi is often provided free of charge in public places such as airports.
- Where there are advantages, however, there are usually disadvantages, including the WLAN / WiFi: Among other things, the transmission speed, which is lower than with a cable, is unfavorable. The signal may also be interrupted if you are too far from the source. Finally, the generated WLAN radiation is criticized, similar to the cell phone radiation.
How to use WLAN / WiFi
- To use WiFi at home, you must have a WiFi router. You must then activate and set up WLAN on the device.
- Tip: If you have connected your computer to the Internet via a LAN cable, you can also use this PC to create a WLAN hotspot to operate a WiFi network without a suitable router.
- If you've set up your network but you're having signal strength issues, consider buying a WiFi repeater. These devices amplify the signal and can thus improve the network quality.
- Of course, your devices must ultimately also be able to use WLAN. Even older computers can be upgraded with a WLAN module.
- We will explain to you in the next practical tip how you can secure your WLAN.
