What does my car know about me? Your vehicle stores this data about you
Modern cars collect a lot of data about the car itself, but also about the driver. In this practical tip, we will show you which data is stored and what problems can arise from it.
What does my car know about me? Your vehicle stores this data about you
- The navigation system continuously records the current position of the car while driving. GPS detection can also be used for traffic jam information and emergency calls.
- The speed, acceleration and time traveled are also recorded by a wide variety of sensors. This information is used among other things by the airbags and the ESP. Autonomous driving also benefits from this data.
- Fatigue detection also records data about the driver. For this recognition, additional data on the blinking behavior and the way in which you step on the pedals is recorded.
- The data not only feed the system itself, but also help the mechanics in the workshop. A large amount of data is also required for the messages in the error memory.
Data octopus car: is misuse possible?
At the moment there is no legal regulation as to which data may be recorded and passed on. In the future, automakers would like to add a function to the cockpit in which drivers can see exactly what data is being recorded.
- One of the biggest concerns that have not yet been legally regulated is the use of such data in court. In the case of serious accidents, the data on driving behavior and fatigue detection could be used as evidence.
- Insurance companies are also interested in the data from the cars. The first insurance companies are already offering an adapter for the car, which passes data on driving behavior to the insurance company. If you drive properly, you can save costs. In the future, however, this could also be fatal to customers.
- A development like smartphones is at least theoretically conceivable. If you stop at a fast food chain or an electronics retailer with your car, appropriate advertisements could be displayed in the cockpit or on the connected cell phone.
