Washing machine: save energy when washing clothes
If you save energy with the washing machine, it can pay off with the next electricity bill. We have put together the most important energy saving tips for you.
Save with energy-efficient washing machines
Washing machines are always provided with an energy consumption label. These are divided into energy efficiency classes G to A +++.
- The higher the class, the more economical the washing machine. Devices with the A +++ label therefore use very little energy.
- Especially if you wash a lot, it is worth investing in a device with better energy efficiency.
- You can find out more about the importance of energy efficiency classes at the following link.
Save energy with full washing drums
A washing machine that is only half full does not help you save electricity, the energy required per wash cycle is the same.
- Instead of washing individual parts, it is worth collecting dirty clothes. In this way you can fully utilize the capacity of the washing drum and thus also the energy consumption.
- If there is still a hand's width in the drum, it is optimally filled.
- Modern models are designed for up to 12 kg of laundry. For single households, a much smaller volume is usually sufficient. In another practical tip, we explain what else you should pay attention to when it comes to the drum size of a washing machine.
Choose washing program and temperature sensibly
The washing machine uses the most energy to heat the water. Therefore, choosing the lowest possible temperature is more important than a short duration of the wash cycle.
- Slightly soiled textiles can be washed at 30 to 40 degrees. You save about half the electricity compared to a wash cycle at 60 degrees.
- 60 degrees or more are usually only required for textiles with high hygiene requirements, such as towels and underwear.
Avoid prewash and save energy
Prewash is often not required. You can pre-treat individual stains by hand and only then throw the laundry into the drum.
- A little detergent on the stain or bile soap works well for this.
- The prewash cycle is only worthwhile in the case of heavy soiling, for example work clothes.
