You were only inattentive for a moment and you have water damage to your iPhone. This does not necessarily mean that your cell phone is now broken. We have put together a few helpful resuscitation measures for you.
First steps in the event of fluid damage
So that the water damage that has already occurred is kept as low as possible and can no longer spread, you should first observe the following steps.
- Dab your iPhone gently with an absorbent cloth, such as a handkerchief or toilet paper.
- Then check your iPhone: if it is not already turned off, you should do it now. Obviously, the protection circuit has not yet been activated, which is why you have to switch off the operation manually. You can then place the device near a heater with a towel or blanket pad.
- If your iPhone is already turned off, the protection circuit has been activated automatically. Therefore, you should not try to switch your iPhone back on now, otherwise you risk a short circuit. Therefore, place it near a heater and let the device dry there for approx. 24 - 48 hours.
- You can also put your iPhone in a bowl filled with uncooked rice to dry. The rice absorbs the liquid in the area. Alternatively, silica gel or desiccant balls help.
Unscrew and repair iPhone yourself
If you are technically savvy and already have experience with repairs to iPhone models, you can open your iOS device and initiate rescue measures yourself. This step is strongly discouraged if you have not yet opened any iPhone models. You will also lose any warranty claims.
- However, you can open the SIM slot of your iPhone without any problems and try to let some liquid run out of the iPhone. Never blow into the SIM slot with a hair dryer. Carefully dab a microfiber cloth in and around the SIM opening.
- If you have opened the iPhone, you can carefully suck the liquid out of the iPhone with a vacuum cleaner.
Send in the iPhone for repair
Professional help is advisable at this point. You should therefore look for an iPhone repair service in your area. There are also some providers online where you can send your iPhone in for repair.
- "unitel2000" repairs your iPhone for as little as 29 euros including return shipping. If spare parts need to be replaced, you will receive an estimate. The device is checked, cleaned and then tested.
- You can also contact the "Doc-Phone" repair service. If you send in your iPhone here, it will first be disassembled and placed in a special solution for 24 hours to counteract the corrosion. After the device has been placed in the drying chamber for a day, it is tested again. If it still does not work, you will not incur any costs other than the postage price. After receiving the estimate, you can then opt for further treatment.
Note: Liquid damage is not covered by Apple's warranty. For this, Apple has even installed a sensor that detects water damage. Sending the iPhone to Apple will not help you. In this case, a cell phone insurance may help you. You can find out how much such a policy costs and whether it is worth it at all in our practical tip on iPhone insurance.
