Water damage to the MacBook - what to do?
In this practical tip, we explain what you can do with water damage on the MacBook.
MacBook: First aid for water damage
If your MacBook has come into contact with water, you should first determine how big the damage is.
- Dry the outside of the device with a lint-free towel. Use a damp rag if the liquid contains glue like sugar. Only a professional can remove moisture in the housing, otherwise your guarantee will lapse. To do this, contact the Apple Support Hotline or a local repair service. Hobbyists clean the inside of MacBooks with isopropyl alcohol or ultrasound. But you should know what you are doing to avoid further damage.
- A short circuit often occurs as soon as the MacBook comes into contact with water. Do not switch it on again, but wait until it is completely dry. This will prevent additional damage from occurring.
- If possible, report the damage to your insurance company. Depending on the extent, the logic board inside, graphics card, as well as the keyboard and trackpad must be replaced. Therefore, you should consider whether a new MacBook is cheaper.
- If you made backups using the TimeMachine, it may be safer to remove the hard drive. If you have no experience with this, there are often repair stores in your area.
- For all measures, the MacBook should not be switched on prematurely and not be connected to the power. Do not put it on the heater, but let it dry at room temperature. Then contact a specialist.
