WaveLab 7: normalize levels - how it works
With Wavelab, you can normalize the level of entire audio files or sections in just a few steps. We'll tell you how it works.
Normalize levels in Wavelab 7
Sometimes audio files are too quiet or are supposed to have the same maximum volume for certain purposes. Then you need to normalize your audio files. It's easy to do in Wavelab. You can find detailed tips in the picture gallery:
- Open the desired audio file or several files.
- In the active audio file, mark the area you want to normalize.
- The [N] key takes you to the normalization menu.
- Here you can first let Wavelab determine the current peak level.
- In the "Desired peak level" area, enter the value to which you want to normalize the level.
- With a click on "Apply" the normalization starts, that means the marked area is multiplied by the factor that brings the peak level to the desired value.
- If you save the file now, the file is saved with the adjusted level.

Latest videos
Start Wavelab and open the desired audio file via »File«, »Open« or by clicking on the folder icon at the top left.
Wavelab can open a variety of audio formats, such as WAV, MP3, AAC, some of them also from video formats, such as AVI. You can see whether Wavelab can open the desired format by dragging and dropping the file into the gray area of the Wavelab window.
After opening the file, the waveform is displayed. Mark the area you want to normalize here. If you want to normalize the entire file, select it with [Ctrl] + [A].

Now you can first determine the current peak value of your marking.
This is normalized to the value that you enter in the "Desired peak level" field. You can normalize to a value between -60dB and 0dB, Wavelab does not offer lower levels. With a click on "apply" the normalization is carried out.
If you want to normalize regularly to a certain level, you can enter it and save it as a preset by clicking on the filing cabinet. From now on you can select this under "Preset
" load.
In contrast to VST or Direct-X effects, a calculation, the so-called "rendering", is not necessary. Simply save with [Ctrl] + [S] or via »File«, »Save as
".
