Web.de: SSL conversion - you have to pay attention to that
We'll tell you what to look out for after the SSL switch at web.de.
Web.de: Check the certificate
Check whether you are really securely connected to web.de:
- You can recognize this from the URL, among other things: It begins here with "https". In the common browsers Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer you will also find a lock symbol in the address bar.
- To check the certificate, simply click on the lock. You will then receive detailed information on the encryption type and verification.
- If you call up web.de with your browser, you do not need to make any further settings. However, if you use e-mail programs such as Outlook or Thunderbird, you must activate SSL there in the settings. In the instructions below, we show you how this works.
SSL settings for web.de in Outlook
- In Outlook, click on "File" in the top left and then select "Account Settings".
- Click here on your account and select "Change".

- If you use the "POP3" setting, enter port 587 as "Outbox (SMTP)". For the "Use the following encrypted connection type" setting, select the "TLS" setting. The "Inbox (POP3)" gets port 995. Check the setting "Server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)". For older versions of Outlook, you must select the "SSL" option from the "Use the following encrypted connection type" list.
- For web.de Club members who use the "IMAP" setting, the port for "Outbox (SMTP)" is 587, for "Inbox (IMAP)" 993. For both, you must again set the "SSL" select from the list.
- Save with a click on "OK".
