Switch to iOS 11: How to check if your apps are compatible
With the switch to iOS 11, thousands of apps are expected to be incompatible with the latest Apple operating system. We'll tell you why and how you can continue to use your apps.
iOS 11: Why are there problems with the apps?
- Most iPhones and iPads currently use iOS 10.2. If you are using the public beta of iOS 10, the latest version of iOS 10.3 is already available.
- There are now indications that from iOS 11 there will be major compatibility problems with various apps. Older apps that have not received updates for a long time could then fail completely.
Switch to iOS 11: which apps are compatible?
- The reason for the whole problem is the old 32-bit structure of the apps. Since the iPhone 5S first worked with a 64-bit processor in 2013, the app developers were also asked to create their apps in the 64-bit system. This primarily makes the apps faster.
- Most app developers have now upgraded their apps, but around 8 percent of iOS apps are still missing. After all, that's 187, 000 apps that are threatened.
- Whether Apple really pulls the plug for all 32-bit apps in September with iOS 11 is currently still unclear. In iOS 10.3, however, the user is made aware of which apps may soon no longer be able to run or only slowly. Apple also asks to inform the relevant app developers.
- To see which apps will soon stop working, you can simply open the Settings app under iOS 10.3. Here you will find the new category "App Compatibility", here you will be informed if one or more apps on your device will no longer be compatible with iOS 11. The most common and popular apps were usually changed years ago.
