Planting grapevines: tips for cultivation, care & harvest
Planting your own vines is a dream for many. The vines not only look good, they also carry delicious grapes when properly cared for. We give you all the information about planting, growing and harvesting the vine.
Planting grapevines: how it works
If you have bought a vine, you should plant it well watered. To plant, you also need a spade and a climbing aid, for example a trellis.
- Place the trellis in a warm, sunny location and pry a deep hole from the ground below the trellis.
- When you plant the plant, the roots of the vine should completely disappear into the hole. If so, fill the hole with soil so that the grapevine can stand firmly.
- Finally, you should give the plant plenty of water and attach the branches to the grid with plant wire.
Care of the grapevine
Caring for the plant is very complex. If the grapevine is not cut regularly, no fruit will form.
- In spring and summer you should cut the shoots of the vine and leave a maximum of 5 strong shoots. You can also read about how to best cut the wine in books.
- Make sure that the shoots are always well attached to the climbing aid and occasionally loosen the ground.
- In winter, you should cover your grapevine on the ground with soil or pine twigs so that it does not freeze.
Harvest your own grapes
Harvesting the grapes is very easy and the harvest time starts in August.
- If the grapes have a nice color and taste sweet, you can slowly start harvesting.
- The grape handles can be easily cut off with secateurs.
- You can enjoy the grapes straight, make jelly from them or process them in a cake. You can also make grape juice and wine from some varieties.
