Which iPhone to buy? The best tips for decision making

Apple has now launched so many iPhones that it is difficult to decide which one to buy. That is why we show you the differences between the different models in this practical tip.

Buy iPhone 4 and older?

Buying an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G is no longer recommended. The current iOS 9 operating system no longer runs on the 3-series models; iOS 7 is the last supported update for the iPhone 4. Since many apps require the latest iOS version, you can no longer use these models to their full extent. It is also questionable how long Apple will continue to offer support for iOS 7.

Buy another model: iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S is no longer in the Apple shop, but is only available from third-party providers from around 260 euros.

• The smartphone is also the last one that still works with a micro SIM card. New models require a nano SIM card.
• This iPhone also has a dock connector instead of a Lightning connector.
• The iPhone 4S with an A5 dual-core processor is significantly slower than its successors.
• Like its successors, the smartphone has an 8-megapixel main camera. Nevertheless, the newer devices take much better photos.

Buy iPhone 5?

The iPhone 5 has a better processor and is larger than its predecessor.

• It has an A6 processor with two cores and is still somewhat slower than its successors.
• The iPhone 5 only works with a Nano-Sim and has a Lightning connector instead of the dock connector.
• The cell phone has a 0.9 megapixel front camera. This is a clear improvement over the VGA front camera of the iPhone 4S.
• The screen size is 10.16 cm compared to 8.89 cm on the iPhone 4S. The successors to the iPhone 4S are all a bit thinner and lighter.
• In contrast to its predecessor, the iPhone 5 supports LTE.
• The new price is around 400 euros.

iPhone 5S and iPhone 5c

The iPhone 5S and the cheaper sister model 5c are the oldest iPhones that are still available in the Apple shop.

• Both phones only work with Nano-Sim and have a Lightning connector.
• The iPhone 5S has an A7 dual-core processor with 64-bit, the iPhone 5c has the same processor as the iPhone 5.
• While the iPhone 5S, like its predecessors, comes with a noble aluminum frame, the 5c plastic back cover is available in different colors.
• The front cameras of the two phones have 1.2 megapixel HD video recording (720p) and a backlit sensor.
• The iPhone 5c is available from 380 euros, the iPhone 5S costs 460 euros.

The latest models: iPhone 6 and 6S

The latest models are the iPhone 6 and the successor, the iPhone 6S. The 6 series has rounded corners and edges and is significantly larger than all its predecessors. The standard version has a screen size of 4.7 inches, the iPhone 6 Plus and 6S Plus even have a whopping 5.5 inches.

• The iPhone 6 is equipped with an A8 chip and is therefore significantly faster than the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 6S relies on the A9 processor and thus creates even better performance.
• The iPhone 6 also has an 8-megapixel camera, while the successor Apple uses 12 megapixels.
• An innovation that is reserved for the iPhone 6S is 3D Touch.
• Apple also only improved the front camera for the 6S: instead of 1.2 megapixels, the camera now has a powerful 5 megapixels.
• The iPhone 6 is available from around 560 euros, the 6S currently costs around 740 euros.

Which iPhone is the best?

• The iPhone 4S is certainly still a good smartphone, but clearly too slow compared to its successors. Apple's software support is also coming to an end.
• iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c hardly differ in their performance and features. Both models will probably go through at least one software update and are therefore still up to date. If you like the colorful look of the iPhone 5c, go for this model, if you would like the classic, luxurious design, choose the iPhone 5.
• The iPhone 5S offers a little more performance, but there are no major differences in terms of appearance and features compared to its predecessor. Nevertheless, we recommend this iPhone instead of its predecessor, because it will probably be supplied with software for even longer.
• Absolute high-end devices are the iPhone 6 and the new iPhone 6s, as well as the even larger Plus versions. However, keep in mind that the 6-series models are larger than their predecessors and that operation with small hands can be quite difficult.
