Who owns the IP? How to locate suspicious mail senders
Who owns the IP? If you have received a dubious email, it is often useful to find out where it came from. In this practical tip, we will show you how to locate the corresponding IP address.
What is the IP?
Every computer that moves on the Internet has an IP address under which it can be reached. This address only exists once in a network and can therefore be precisely assigned to a single person.
- If you want to determine the IP address of an e-mail sender, you have to look at the mail in the source text. To do this, open an exported mail with a text editor. The IP address is there in the header. In another practical tip we will show you again in detail how you can find anonymous e-mail senders.
- In the next section, we present a website that you can use to locate an IP address of a potential spam or malware sender.
Locating the IP address
You can enter an IP address on the ip-tracker.org website and find out detailed information about the owner.
- When you access the page for the first time, it shows you which information can be called up based on your own address. You will find that this is very detailed information about your whereabouts.
- A map shows the place of origin of the address to within a few hundred meters. Under "IP Location" on the left side you can see more detailed information. For example, the country, city and postcode are shown exactly. The line "ISP" (Internet Service Provider) indicates the name of the Internet service provider of the searched IP.
- Longitude and latitude are shown under "Continent Lat / Lon". You can also copy the values there and transfer them to a map service such as Google Maps, for example to obtain satellite images and further information.
