Why is tea sausage called tea sausage - is tea included?
There is no tea in the sausage - so much in advance.
- At the end of the 19th century, the city of Rügenwalde was a "world city" in terms of sausage and specialties from sausage mixes. Rügenwalde was a small town in the back of Pomerania and a port town. The latter made it possible for the meat and sausage merchants in Rügenwalde to trade in sausages in all directions.
- The food brand, which now also produces meatless sausages, took on the name of the place. This is how the Rügenwalder sausage factory came into being in 1834. The founder was Carl Müller, a smart businessman.
- However, it was not Carl Müller who invented the tea sausage, but his son developed the spread sausage, which is still known today, around 1900. It had several advantages: it was inexpensive to manufacture and it could be eaten by people with bad teeth, which was not uncommon at the time. The sausage also had a good taste, was easy to preserve, pack, portion and transport.
- Back then, making tea sausage was not as easy as it is today. At that time there were no such powerful and good shredding machines. However, the ingredients had to be broken down into small parts and ground. The sausage also had to mature. The result was impressive, because the sausage had a strong yet fine taste.
- One advantage was the calorie content of the tea sausage due to the rather high fat content. At that time, not every worker could buy sausage from his wages. Small pieces of the sausage were enough for a bread to be filled.
- But the tea sausage was initially not intended for the working class. Afternoon tea was a constant in the middle-class household. In Rügenwalde, emphasis was placed on heart rather than sweetness. So the new sausage creation quickly found its place at tea time.
- So the name Teewurst did not come from the pen of a brilliant marketing manager, but developed over time. The savory greasy sausage was often consumed at tea time. This is how the name came about and how it found its spread on the sausage market worldwide. Even the small town of Rügenwalde still benefits from this invention.
