- Open Whatsapp and select "Settings" from the menu in the top right.
- In the "Chats" category you will find the "Chat backup" item.
- Tap the "Save" button here to save the current chat history.
- Clicking "Backup chat history" creates a manual backup.
- Tip: If you use the chat backup via Google Drive, you do not have to do anything else. In the next paragraph we will show you how to transfer the locally saved backup manually.
Transfer WhatsApp chats to new Android phone
- The local chat backup is located on your Android smartphone in the "WhatsApp / Databases" folder. This is either in the local memory or on the SD card. The backup is named "msgstore.db.crypt".
- If you connect the mobile phone to the PC using a USB cable, you can copy the file to the computer and then to the new mobile phone. Alternatively, you can access the file directly on your cell phone using a file manager such as ES File Explorer and send it to the new cell phone via email, Bluetooth or cloud storage.
- Then install WhatsApp on the new phone, but don't start the app yet. Copy the "msgstore.db.crypt" back into the "WhatsApp / Databases" folder.
- You can then start WhatsApp and register again. The chat backup is then automatically recognized and imported at your request.
Transfer WhatsApp chats between iOS and Android
Switching from iOS to iOS or from Android to Android is still relatively easy. It becomes much more difficult if you switch between iOS and Android.
- If you switch from iOS to Android, you can do this completely free of charge with the WazzapMigrator Lite app. In order to transmit images and videos, the paid version is necessary. The price of the app has risen from 2.49 to 6.49 euros in recent years.
- The WhatsApp switch from Android to iOS is also possible. Unfortunately there is currently no free version for this. Only demo versions are available, with which you can transfer a handful of messages to the sample. If that worked, you can still consider whether it is worth the 20 euros for the full version.
