WhatsApp: delete backup - how it works
WhatsApp automatically backs up your messages and media in backups, which can cost a lot of storage in the long run. In this article, we will tell you how to delete the backups.
Android: delete WhatsApp backup
You can create a backup of your data in the WhatsApp settings for security. But the app also automatically creates a backup automatically. You can delete them again:
- To do this, open the file manager on your smartphone or use an alternative Explorer app.
- In the app, navigate to the path "/ sdcard / WhatsApp / Databases /". Note: Although the path does not suggest, the folder is usually located on the internal memory of the mobile phone.
- Then hold your finger on the "Databases" folder for a few seconds and select "Delete".
- This removes all backups from your phone. Alternatively, open the folder and delete only the individual backups.
iOS: Delete WhatsApp backup
The procedure is a little different on the iPhone. This is because WhatsApp does not create the backup on the device itself, but in the iCloud. You can switch off these fuses at any time:
- Start the Settings app on your iOS device.
- There you tap on the entry "iCloud" and then on "Storage and Backup".
- Now decide on the entry "Manage storage".
- Here you select the "Your iPhone" option.
- Now flip the switch next to "WhatsApp" and exit the Settings app. All WhatsApp backups are now removed from the iCloud and no new backups are created.
