WhatsApp: Hide pictures in photo gallery - how it works
You can hide your WhatsApp pictures in the gallery of your smartphone. We'll show you how to make the change.
Android: Hide WhatsApp images in gallery
If you create a specific file in the WhatsApp folder, the contained images are no longer displayed in the gallery. You don't even need root rights for this.
- Make sure you have a file explorer installed on your smartphone. If you do not yet have an app of this type, you can use the "ES File Explorer".
- Start the file explorer and open the "WhatsApp" folder on your internal or external storage.
- Navigate to the "Media" folder and then open the "WhatsApp Images".
- Now you have to create a file. In the ES File Explorer, click on "+ New" at the bottom left and then select "File". Change the name of the new file to ".nomedia" (note: without spaces) and confirm with "OK".
- If you now open your gallery app, your WhatsApp images will no longer be displayed. You can do the same with your WhatsApp videos and, by the way, also with other picture folders.
WhatsApp: No longer save images in the photo gallery
The above instructions are only available for Android, the procedure does not work on the iPhone. However, there are other options for iOS and Android.
- Open the "Settings" in WhatsApp and find the "Media Auto-Download" item in the "Data and memory usage" category. Here you can specify when which files are saved on your mobile phone.
- In addition, you can use the "Media visibility" option in each chat to determine whether the images are displayed in the gallery. To do this, open the desired chat and tap on the name of the contact at the top to find the option.
- This new feature has been available in the WhatsApp beta since June 2018. It may take some time before all users receive the function.
In another practical tip, we will show you the circumstances under which you can subsequently delete WhatsApp messages.
