WhatsApp - pictures are not displayed
In some cases, WhatsApp may not display images. However, the old photos are by no means gone forever, but can be saved with a few tweaks. You can read how to do this in this practical tip.
WhatsApp pictures are not displayed - is the app on the SD card?
If you have moved WhatsApp Messenger to the external storage of your Android smartphone, this may be the reason why no pictures are displayed. How to move WhatsApp back to your internal device storage:
- Navigate to the Android settings.
- There, select the "Applications" item.
- There should now be an option "Preferred installation path" (see picture). If this is the case, select the desired location where the apps are to be installed: in your case "Internal device memory".
- If you do not have this option, please read the next two bullet points.
Preferred installation path: Option not available
- To get the "Preferred installation path" option, you have to download and install the "AppInstaller" app from the Google Play Store. During the installation you can confirm the prompt "No apps on SD card" with OK.
- The menu item "Preferred installation path" should now be displayed under "Settings" -> "Applications".
Remove and reinstall WhatsApp
To solve the actual problem, you have to briefly uninstall WhatsApp and then download it again from the Play Store. After that, your pictures should appear again. Note that you should back up your chat histories beforehand, as these may be lost.
- We show you how to uninstall WhatsApp in the linked article.
- If there are still remnants in the installation directory, they can be deleted with a file manager - for example, the ES File Explorer.
- Then restart your smartphone.
- Now you can download and install WhatsApp Messenger again from the Google Play Store. After that, your pictures should be displayed correctly again.
- However, if you are dealing with older chat histories and pictures that you received on another device, these may not be displayed.
