WhatsApp normally downloads photos automatically. However, if you want to save a profile picture, you have to manually load it onto your smartphone.
Saving WhatsApp photos: It's easy
If the images sent are not automatically saved on WhatsApp, you can save the media in your gallery with just a tap.
- To do this, open the chat in which the desired photo is located.
- Here the blurry image appears with an arrow.
- As soon as you tap the arrow, the photo will be downloaded to your smartphone.
- You can no longer easily download your contacts' profile pictures. Take a screenshot with your iOS or Android device.
- Group pictures can be downloaded in the conventional way. Instructions for this can be found in another article and below in the video.
Automatically save media on WhatsApp

Image 1: First open the WhatsApp settings
Image 2: Switch to the "Data and memory usage" tab.
Image 3: Finally, select the conditions under which WhatsApp images should be saved automatically.
Of course you can also set the WhatsApp to automatically save the pictures.
- To do this, open WhatsApp and click on the three dots at the top right (see Figure 1).
- There you switch to "Settings" and from here on to "Data and memory usage" (see Figure 2).
- Under "Automatic download of media" you can specify when the WhatsApp images should be downloaded (see image 3).
