If you have used WhatsApp for one year, you have to pay an annual fee of 89 cents. You can find out how this works without a credit card in this practical tip.
Pay WhatsApp annual fee with PayPal instead of credit card
Google only allows credit card payments for in-app purchases. However, you can download a slightly modified version from the official WhatsApp website. This is independent of Google Play and also allows PayPal payment.
- First download the WhatsApp installation file from the official website.
- Copy the file to your smartphone.
- Execute the apk file there and reinstall WhatsApp (note: in the system settings under "Security" the item "Unknown origin" must be activated).
- Start the app and navigate to Settings - Account - Payment information. Here you will find the option to pay your annual fee with PayPal.
- You can then reinstall WhatsApp via Google Play and thus retrieve future version updates.
Extend current subscription via WhatsApp settings
If you have already installed WhatsApp, you can extend the annual fee due via the settings via PayPal or Google Wallet.
- Click the menu button and click "Settings".
- Open the "Payment info" menu item under "Account".
- Here you can pay the fee via PayPal or Google Wallet.
