In WhatsApp, you can use voice input in two ways: Either send a voice message that the recipient can listen to, or use automatic transcription of the spoken text into text that the recipient can read. We will show you both methods below.
WhatsApp: Send voice message
With a voice message, you send an audio recording that the recipient can listen to at any time.
- If you are in the chat to which you want to send the voice message, you can start the recording.
- For this you will find a small microphone symbol next to the input field for the usual text message.
- Press and hold the microphone icon to start recording and speak the desired message.
- When you are finished, release the icon to automatically send the message.
- If you prefer to delete the recording instead of sending it while recording, swipe your finger to the left.
- Tap the text field of the chat you want to send a message to. This will cause the keyboard to appear.
- On the iPhone you will find a small microphone icon between the space and the smiley button.
- Under Android you will find the function in different places, depending on the device, the Android version and the selected keyboard.
- Most of the time, you will also find the function next to the space bar. With some versions, however, you must hold down the key before you see the microphone symbol.
- Now speak the desired message and tap on "Done". As you speak, the spoken text is automatically written in the text field.
How to edit a voice message is described in the next practical tip.
