If WhatsApp suddenly stops displaying notifications, it may be due to your smartphone settings or the app itself. We show you the most common causes and reveal how you can reactivate push notifications in any case.
WhatsApp shows no notifications: Check app settings
In order for WhatsApp to deliver your messages at all, you need a stable and good internet connection. If the reception is weak, you will often not receive notifications. If these do not appear in the WiFi network or with a good connection, you should check the WhatsApp settings:
- Start Messenger and open the "Settings".
- Then tap on "Notifications" and make sure that the notification tones and the vibration alarm are activated.
- Then switch to one of your chats and tap the menu button on your smartphone.
- If the entry "Sound on" appears here, the chat is muted. Tap the option to turn notifications back on.
- Repeat these steps for all chats where you don't receive notifications.
iPhone: Activate WhatsApp notifications in the system
You can not only turn off the notifications in WhatsApp itself, but also deactivate them in the iOS settings. Therefore, make sure that the push notifications for Messenger are switched on.
- To do this, open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Under "Messages" look for the entry "WhatsApp".
- Activate at least the "Allow averaging" option. You can also turn on notifications in the averaging center and lock screen.
Android: Allow WhatsApp notifications
WhatsApp notifications can also be blocked system-wide on Android. Therefore you should check your settings:
- First start the Settings app on your smartphone.
- In the "Apps" area, tap on the "WhatsApp" entry.
- Activate the checkbox at "Show notifications".
Emergency help: grab WhatsApp errors at the root
If these tips do not help, there is a deeper software problem. But you can also do this in different ways:
- Update: Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. To do this, start the AppStore or Google Play and download all available updates.
- System update: You should also keep your smartphone software up to date at all times. Therefore, always install the latest iOS updates and Android updates.
- Reinstallation: If nothing helps, you can completely remove WhatsApp and reinstall it. We will show in further articles how this works on Android and on the iPhone. For security, you should create a backup beforehand.
- Reset: A complete reset of your smartphone remains as an emergency solution. You delete all data and settings and reset the device to factory settings. Instructions for Android and iOS can be found in other articles.
