WhatsApp automatically shows you in chat when a contact was last online. You can hide your own status so that your contacts do not see when you last used WhatsApp. We'll show you how.
WhatsApp: Hide "last online" under Android
The WhatsApp "last online" feature allows everyone to see when you last opened the app. However, if you want to protect your privacy and keep this information to yourself, you can adjust this in the settings. On Android, do the following:
- Open WhatsApp on your Android smartphone and switch to the settings by tapping the three dots in the top right corner.
- In the settings, select the "Account" item and click here on "Data protection".
- Now select the sub-item "Last online".
- Here you can now set who can see your status:
- "Everyone": Everyone who has your number.
- "My contacts": Only the numbers that you have saved yourself.
- "Nobody"
- If you have selected an option, you can close the WhatsApp settings.
Remove the WhatsApp timestamp on iPhone
If you have installed WhatsApp on an iOS device, proceed similarly to hide the status "Last online":
- Open the WhatsApp settings by tapping the gear.
- Select the "Account" item and then the "Privacy" option.
- Here you can change the setting for "Last online". Tap on the sub-item and select your desired option.
- Your selection is automatically saved so that you can switch back to the chat.
In addition to your "last online" status, you can also remove the blue WhatsApp checkmarks that appear when a message has been read. In the next practical tip, we'll explain how it's done.
