Store whiskey - you should note that
Storing whiskey needs to be learned, because incorrect storage can have a decisive influence on the taste of the spirit. We have summarized for you what you should consider.
How to store unopened whiskey
There are some tips to help you keep your whiskey stable for as long as possible. The following applies to unopened whiskey bottles.
- Always store your whiskey upright and in a dark place. For example, take a box and leave the bottles in it. A bar cabinet also offers a good option for storage.
- Light changes the chemical composition of the whiskey - and with it the taste. Strong incidence of light causes the alcohol to separate and settle from the rest of the whiskey, which means a negative taste development.
- If you want to keep your whiskey for more than half a year, you should not store the bottles at room temperature, but put them in a dark, cool room. A cellar is well suited for this. If you store your whiskey at room temperature for a long time, the taste changes noticeably.
- You should always store whiskey upright, as the natural cork will contract after some time and will no longer hold tight. If you stored the bottle lying flat, the contents would leak.
- Store your whiskey bottles in a place where there are no temperature fluctuations, otherwise the taste of the whiskey can also change negatively.
Store opened whiskey
Different rules apply to open whiskey bottles than to closed ones.
- You can also keep open whiskey at room temperature. So that the taste does not change, you should place the open bottle as well as closed bottles in a dark, cool place as possible.
- To keep your whiskey as long as possible, you can put marbles in the bottle so that there is less air in the bottle. Otherwise the taste of the whiskey changes due to the contact with oxygen.
- You can also fill the whiskey in a carafe. The bottle is sealed as airtight as possible by the cork. You should keep the carafe in the darkest possible place.
- You can also close the opened bottle again with a parafilm.
