The app store alternative Cydia is extensive and can quickly become confusing without instructions. We therefore introduce you to the most important basics in our practical tip.
Jailbreak needed
A jailbreak is mandatory and Cydia installs it automatically. If your iDevice is not yet jailbroken, you will find instructions up to iOS version 6 here.
Set up a Cydia account
First you should create an account. This way your Cydia purchases will remain synchronized in the future and you won't have to pay again. This is particularly useful for new system installations.
- Select the "Manage Account" button on the start screen.
- You can now choose between your Facebook and Google account to authenticate yourself (see screenshot). From now on, the respective account will serve as your Cydia account.
How to install Cydia apps on iPhone and iPad
The Cydia app installation is similar to that in the "App Store". A small additional function proves to be extremely practical.
- Press the "Featured" button on the start screen. Here are some of the most helpful Cydia apps.
- Select "Tools to Start With".
- Now press a Cydia tool of your choice and then "Install" in the top right corner.
- Now do not press "Confirm", but on "Select next" (see screenshot). This allows you to select additional Cydia apps for installation.
- When you are satisfied with your selection, press "Confirm" and the apps will be installed in sequence on your iDevice.
Larger app offering through additional repos
Cydia consists of so-called repositories ("repos"). These are sources from which the respective tools are obtained. Therefore, you can expand your Cydia offering by hand by simply adding new repos. From now on, the new apps will also be taken into account in the search.
- Go to "Manage" in the bottom bar.
- Select "Sources" and you will see all of your repos currently in use.
- Press "Edit" in the top right and then "Add" in the top left.
- Now enter the address of a Cydia repo (see screenshot). If you don't know one, use "//apt.pwncenter.com", for example.
