How does the Windows 7 performance index work?
The Windows 7 Performance Index is a feature that shows you the performance of your computer. Performance data of the most important hardware components (processor, RAM, graphics card, hard disk) are determined, which are then rated with 1.0 - 7.9 points. The overall rating of the computer results from the lowest sub-rating.
How does the performance index work?
You can access the performance index using the key combination [Win] + [Pause] or via the control panel under "Performance information and tools". If you want to determine the performance index, the computer checks the individual components.
- For example, the processor has to perform various calculations, such as LZW algorithm or video decoding.
- Data transfer rates are determined and evaluated for hard disk and RAM.
- In addition to data transfer rates, the graphic card also determines the frame rate when displaying different textures.
- The performance index itself should be treated with caution, as the significance of this assessment is limited. Nevertheless, the feature is worthwhile to determine which hardware slows down the system and should be replaced (here, for example, the hard disk).
What to do if the performance index is too low?
Some programs and games check the performance index during installation and thereby determine the scope of performance or display warnings. To avoid this you can change the performance index manually.
- To do this, download the performance index manipulator.
