This practical tip explains how GPS works. Many devices such as navigation systems, smartphones, tablets and smartwatches are equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System). The devices use this to determine their exact position and speed. The function of this technology is explained for you below.
This is how GPS works
A large number of GPS satellites orbit our earth. They send their position and the current time to Earth permanently.
- In order for a GPS device to determine its own position, it must have contact with at least four GPS satellites. The more satellites, the more precisely your own position and speed can be determined.
- The GPS device calculates its own position from the positions and time sent by the GPS satellites. This is done based on the time it takes the signal from the satellite to the device and the transmitted position of the satellite.
- The own speed is then calculated from the time that was required for the distance between two determined GPS coordinates.
