How does iMessage work? Easily explained
If you don't want to communicate via SMS or WhatsApp, you can switch to iMessage. This practical tip shows you how the service works.
iMessage: How does the messaging service work?
- The "Messages" app is preinstalled on every iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. You will find both your SMS and iMessage within the app.
- With iMessage, your messages are sent over the Internet, just like WhatsApp. The big advantage: If the Internet is not working at the moment, you can also send an iMessage by SMS.
- Select a chat with a contact who also uses an iOS device. "IMessage" is now at the bottom of the input field. If a contact does not have an iMessage, it says "SMS message".
- You can also differentiate the messages optically: iMessage messages are always displayed in blue, SMS messages in green.
- To contact a friend via iMessage, you must have saved their contact details in the phone book. You need either his phone number or his Apple ID.
iMessage: How does activation work?
- Open the "Settings" app and select the "Messages" below.
- Activate the "iMessage" option and confirm the process if necessary.
- If desired, you can make further settings here. iMessage is now activated.
In the next practical tip we will explain again what the difference between iMessage and SMS is.
