WiFi modem and WiFi router - the differences
In this practical tip, we will tell you the differences between a WiFi modem and a WiFi router.
The WiFi router
- A WiFi router is a device of the computer networks as well as the Internet. Depending on your point of view, this couples or separates several computers from each other. The device analyzes the incoming data packets for their destination address, forwards them or blocks unwanted data.
- If a data packet is forwarded, it arrives at the connected end devices. This can be routers, computers or other technical devices. The transmission can take place both via LAN cable and wirelessly via WLAN.
- In short: With a router you connect several computers to a network. Alternatively, you can also use the device as a so-called repeater (signal amplifier) and thus improve your WiFi signal.
The WiFi modem
- In contrast to the router, the modem processes digital data for an analog line. Analog communication networks are, for example, the telephone network or cable TV.
- The modem generates suitable signals for this, which are then fed into the line. So the device converts analog to digital signals. In contrast, the router sends a permanent digital signal.
- A modem is used, for example, to log on to the Internet.
Of course, you can also operate more than one router in your network. In the next practical tip, read how you can use two routers in a network.
