Wii U: expand memory - how it works
If you need more storage space on your Wii U, you can expand the internal storage at any time. We'll show you what options you have.
Expand storage on the Wii U.
- The Wii U's memory can currently only be expanded via external USB devices. Both USB sticks and USB hard drives are supported by the Nintendo console. You can find suitable connections on the front and on the back of the Wii U.
- However, Nintendo points out that self-powered hard drives are recommended. They may work better with the Wii U. Devices without their own power supply are not necessarily less suitable.
- In theory, you can also replace the Wii U's internal hard drive. However, this is complex and costly, which is why this procedure is hardly worthwhile.
Notes on expanding memory on the Wii U
There is no limit to the size of the external hard drive. However, some hard drive models may not be supported. There are also a few things to keep in mind when connecting:
- Turn off the Wii U completely before connecting an external hard drive to the console. Then insert the disk.
- Then turn on the Wii U and the hard drive will be formatted directly for the console.
- Attention: All content on the hard drive will be lost during formatting. So back up your data beforehand.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to record the gameplay of the Wii U.
