Wii U: play Wii games on the gamepad - is that possible?
Since the Wii U was released, many interested parties have suspected that the Wii U's gamepad can play all games without being displayed on a TV. You can find out whether this is possible in our practical tip.
Play Wii games without TV on the gamepad
On the predecessor of the Wii U, you need the combination of a Wii remote controller, nunchuck and a sensor bar for many games. Since the gamepad is only optimized for Wii U games, you cannot currently control Wii games with it. Nintendo has updated a function with which you can use your gamepad as a monitor.
- First, make sure your Wii U software is up to date. Then select "Wii menu" in the menu and select "TV and gamepad". Now follow the instructions and have a Wii Remote controller ready.
- When you place a Wii game in the Wii U drive and start it, the image is displayed on the TV and on the gamepad. The TV can now be switched off.
- However, you need a Wii Remote Plus remote control to control the Wii game. In addition to the camera on the gamepad, there are sensors that detect the movements of the Wii Remote.
- Some Wii games also require a nunchuck. For example, you can only play "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" in combination with a nunchuck and Wii-Remote Plus controller.
- Because both hands will usually be occupied by a remote control and a nunchuck, a stand for your Wii U gamepad is recommended. You can use the gamepad as a monitor for your Wii games.
Are all Wii U games displayed completely on the gamepad?
Many assume that at least all Wii U games are displayed completely on the gamepad without a TV. However, caution is advised here: At the moment, this feature is not supported by many Wii U titles. It remains to be seen whether Nintendo will submit a corresponding update. Games like "Wii Fit U" or "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD" can only be played with the gamepad. In case of doubt, it is better to find out from your dealer or online about the compatibility of the individual games.
