Windows 10: use old photo display - how it works

Your computer opens most of the images via the Photos app. However, the old photo display can also be used under Windows 10. All you have to do is make a small change.
Step 1: activate old photo display in Windows 10
Although the old Windows 10 photo display is no longer visible, it still slumbers in the system. With just a few clicks, you can use the classic display as usual. You do not have to enter the quotation marks in our instructions.
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter the " regedit " command here and confirm with " OK ". Then the registry editor opens.
- Navigate to the path on the left " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows Photo Viewer \ Capabilities \ FileAssociations ".
- Right-click on a free area on the right side and select the " String " under " New ".
- Name the string " .webp " and open it with a double click.
- Now enter " PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff " in the text field under " Value " and confirm with " OK ".
- Repeat this for all other desired image formats such as PNG, JPEG, GIF or BMP. The value always remains the same.
Step 2: choose old photo display as standard in Windows 10
After making the changes in the Registry Editor, make the following changes:
- Close the registry editor and open any image file.
- Now you have the choice between several display programs. Select the " Windows Photo Viewer " here.
- If you want to always use the old photo display, check the option "Always use this app to open files".
- If the dialog does not appear, right-click on the picture. Now select "Windows Photo Viewer" here or click on "Select another app" if you don't see the dot.
- Your settings are saved with the " OK " button. You must perform this query once for each file type, such as PNG and JPG.
