Windows 10 shows only a black desktop, there can be several reasons. Most of them are fixed quite easily and are not a real problem. In this practical tip, we will show you what you can do in this case.
Windows 10: desktop is black - that's why
If Windows 10 shows a black screen, go look for the cause.
- As banal as it may sound, make sure you have the screen on. Even computer professionals have forgotten that before.
- Another reason for a black desktop can be a loose cable. This can affect either the monitor's power cable or the monitor cable.
- Also check the monitor's brightness setting. If this is accidentally set to very dark, the screen is black.
- Maybe the display or monitor is damaged. To rule this out, connect another monitor.
- In some cases there is not really a "reason" for a problem. A restart of the computer can fix such an "error" in most cases.
- Not every hardware is compatible with every computer and maybe not with Windows 10. A connected device can cause the error. So disconnect all devices and restart the computer.
- If the correct graphics driver is missing, only the black screen appears after booting up. Here's a tip: First restart the computer until the black desktop appears. Press the Enter key and the login screen appears - which you don't see, but it is there. Then enter your Windows password "blindly" and confirm it. If you are lucky, the desktop appears, then you should update the driver and carry out an update.
