Windows 10: desktop icons move after restart - what to do?
Since Windows 10, the desktop icons may move to the screen after each restart. In this guide, we show step by step how to fix the problem.
Windows 10: Disable automatic desktop icon alignment
In most cases, the problem is with incorrect settings. Therefore, deactivate the automatic alignment of the desktop icons under Windows 10:
- To do this, right-click on an empty space on the desktop.
- In the context menu under "View" remove the check mark at "Arrange symbols automatically".
- Finally restart your computer if all desktop icons remain in their place.

Emergency solution: Fix desktop icon problems in Windows 10 using the registry
If the error persists, you have to intervene more deeply in the system. For security, make a backup of the Windows registry that you can restore in an emergency.
- Then press the key combination [Windows] + [R] and enter the command "regedit" in the new window.
- If you confirm the query of the user account control with "Yes", the Windows registry opens.
- Here you navigate to the path "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1} \ InProcServer32 \".
- In the left column, right-click the "InProcServer32" folder and select the "Permissions" option.
- In the "Group and user names" section, select your Windows account.
- Then check "Full access" in the "Allow" section and save with "OK".
- In the right column, double-click the "(Standard)" entry and enter "% SystemRoot% \ system32 \ windows.storage.dll" as the value.
- Users of the 64-bit version of Windows 10 then navigate to the path "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Wow6432Node \ CLSID \ {42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1} \ InProcServer32 \" and also change the value of the entry "(default)" to " % SystemRoot% \ system32 \ windows.storage.dll ".
- Finally restart your computer if the problem is resolved.
