Windows 10: downgrade to Windows 7 - does it work?
If you are not satisfied with the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, you can downgrade. We'll show you how it's done.
Windows 10: when is a downgrade possible?
- If you don't like Windows 10, you can change your mind again. Microsoft gives you the option to return to Windows 7 for 30 days.
- Then the downgrade from Windows 10 to 7 is no longer offered. With a trick, however, the old operating system can still be installed even after the 30 days have expired. We present you with both options.
Windows 10: Downgrade to Windows 7 within 30 days
When downgrading, Windows 7 is restored from a backup. After that, you have to reinstall some programs like anti-virus software.
- Click on the Windows icon at the bottom left and select "Settings" in the Start menu.
- Under the category "Update and security" you will find the item "Recovery" on the left.
- Under "Return to Windows 8" you can start the process with the "Let's get started" button.
- If you confirm the following warnings with "Next", the downgrade is carried out. This process can take several minutes, in some cases even hours.
Switch from Windows 10 to Windows 7 at any time
If the 30 days have expired, Microsoft no longer offers the option. You now have to switch to Windows 7 manually. This can only be achieved by reinstalling all of your data.
- First, you should back up your data externally. The free Paragon Backup & Recovery program can help you with this.
- In the best case, Windows 7 is still available as an installation DVD. Alternatively, you can download the correct version of Windows. Here you will find Windows 7 Professional as well as Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit) and Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).
- It is worth using the Advanced Tokens Manager so that you do not have to reactivate Windows. The tool secures Windows activation and then restores it under Windows 7.
- Now start the downloaded ISO file from Windows 7, the installation begins. If that doesn't work, you can burn the ISO file onto a DVD using software such as CD Burner XP.
- After installing Windows 7, you can set up the operating system again. If you are asked for a product key during installation, skip the step.
Windows 10: Downgrade to Windows 7 does not work
- If there are problems when downgrading to Windows 7, it is often the fault of newly created user accounts. These must be removed before the downgrade.
- Open the "Accounts" category in "Settings" and look for the newly added account. Remove the user and perform the downgrade again.
