Windows 10: settings cannot be opened - what to do?
If the settings cannot be opened in Windows 10, you are not alone with this problem. We'll show you how to fix it.
Windows 10: Settings do not open
- If you have freshly installed Windows 10, the problem can usually be fixed quickly. Microsoft has released a problem solution that corrects the error on its own.
- If the error only occurred after long use of Windows 10, there is often a more serious problem. But there are also solutions for this.
Troubleshooter: Windows 10 Settings
Microsoft has since released an update that fixes the error. However, if it has already occurred, the update will not help you.
- Download the following Microsoft troubleshooting and run the file.
- Click the "Next" button and let the tool search for problems.
- If the problem persists, it will then be fixed automatically.
Windows 10: Manually fix settings problem
The following instructions have also helped many users so far. A specific file can be responsible for blocking the settings and must be deleted. To do this, however, you first need the necessary rights.
- Press the [Windows] and [E] keys simultaneously so that the Explorer opens.
- Select the item "This PC" on the left and navigate to the path "C: \ Windows \ ImmersiveControlPanel".
- Right-click on the "Application.manifest" file and select the "Properties" there.
- Then switch to "Security" above, select the "User" and click on the "Advanced" button.
- Click on the "Change" link above and enter the PC name followed by "User", eg "TimsPC / User". You can also see the correct name in step 4.
- Click on the "Check name" button and close the window with "Apply" and "OK".
- Close all other windows with "OK" and call the properties of the file again.
- Switch back to "Security" at the top and click the "Edit" button.
- Select the user above and activate the "Allow" option under "Full access".
- Now you can delete the "Application.manifest" file and call up the settings.
Instructions: Repair Windows 10
If the problem still hasn't resolved, repairing Windows can still help:
- Simultaneously press the [Windows] and [X] keys and select the "Command Prompt (Administrator)" option.
- If you confirm the following query with "Yes", the black CMD console opens.
- Enter the command "sfc / scannow" and confirm with the [Enter] key.
- Wait for the verification to complete and then restart Windows.
Instructions: Reinstall Windows 10
- If none of this helps, you should reinstall Windows. The bug was in an earlier version of Windows and was not fixed by the updates. The error should no longer occur in the newer versions of Windows 10.
- Your personal data will be saved in the path "C: \ Windows.old" when you reinstall Windows. Nevertheless, you should back up your data beforehand. In the next practical tip, we will show you how to reset Windows 10 to the factory settings.
