Windows 10 Game Mode: All information
Attention gamers: In the latest version of Windows 10 there is a special game mode. In this practical tip we will tell you what is hidden behind it and what exciting features players can expect.
Game Mode in Windows 10 - so activate it
For some time now there have been rumors about a game mode in Windows 10. The feature is finally available in the latest Insider Preview (version 15019). How to activate the new mode:
- Open the Windows settings with the key combination [Windows] + [I].
- In the new window click on the entry "Gaming". Note: This is only visible in the latest preview version. Users of normal Windows 10 will probably have to wait until April 2017.
- Activate the switch under the entry "Game Mode".
- Alternatively, you can press the key combination [Windows] + [G] during a game and switch on the mode under "General"> "Game Mode" using the gear icon in the Game Bar.
Windows 10: This brings the game mode
As the name suggests, Game Mode should optimize your computer for games. According to Microsoft's Kevin Gammill, this should enable large performance gains. The game mode uses various methods:
- On the one hand, when the game mode is activated, as many CPU cores as possible are exclusively assigned to the currently running game. For example, with an octa-core processor, six cores can only be used for the current game and two for the system. This ensures fewer frame drops and makes the game run faster.
- In addition, Game Mode optimizes the clock cycles of your graphics card and reserves individual areas of the graphics memory for the currently running game. However, the gain in performance from this should be limited.
- Game Mode is also intended to prevent the performance of a background process from being reduced in the game due to the CPU load. For this, the background processes are limited.
- It is not yet known whether the game mode intervenes even further in the system. But it is particularly practical that the new feature works with all games under Windows. However, the mode should only work particularly effectively with apps from the Windows Store.
- Ultimately, the effectiveness of the game mode depends on the respective game developers. They can determine how Game Mode works for their titles.
Users of the normal Windows version can get more performance out of the system even without gaming mode. We have collected the most useful tips to help you make Windows 10 faster.
