Windows 10 autumn update: the most common problems & solutions
The autumn update for Windows 10 (October 2017) is causing massive problems for many users: blue screens and reboot loops appear for many Windows users. This is particularly problematic because the update is often installed in the background and the user cannot defend himself against installing the update when the computer is started.
Windows 10: autumn update causes problems
If you have not deactivated the automatic Windows updates, a new update is currently being installed on your computer. Microsoft has been rolling out the update for Windows 10 since October 17, 2017. But (again) there are big problems.
- The most common problem is a blue screen with a boot error: The system no longer recognizes the drive and therefore cannot start.
- The so-called "inaccessible boot device" error can also appear while using the computer. This is due to the fact that patches were released shortly after the update, which should provide more stability and close gaps. If the computer tries to install both at the same time, a blue screen appears.
- Many users also have problems with OneDrive. Here a menu item is missing to activate "Files On-Demand". The solution is quite simple: Reinstall OneDrive.
Fix update problem in Windows 10
Fortunately, there is now a way to fix the blue screen after the update:
- If you find the "Troubleshoot" menu item on the blue screen, select it. If you don't get there at all, start the computer in safe mode. From there you can go to "PC Settings"> "Update and Security"> "Restore"> "Advanced Start" (see picture). Now you also get to the "Troubleshooter". There you can remove the entry responsible for the blue screen.
- When you click the "Troubleshoot" button, select "Advanced Options" and then "Command Prompt".
- At the command prompt, type:
- reg load hklm \ temp c: \ windows \ system32 \ config \ software
- reg delete "HKLM \ temp \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Component Based Servicing \ SessionsPending" / v Exclusive
- reg unload HKLM \ temp
Blue screen after Windows update: How to proceed
Next, go to the list of installed packages in the command prompt: dism / image: C: \ / get-packages
- You can now see at a glance which packages have been successfully and unsuccessfully installed. Delete packages that are not installed with the following command:
- MKDIR C: \ temp \ packages
- dism / image: c: \ / remove-package / package name: PACKAGE NAME
- / ScratchDir: c: \ temp \ packages
- For PACKAGE NAME, enter the name of the package that you want to remove. After removing any packages that are not installed, you must restart the computer.
The best tips for a safe update
- You should turn off automatic Windows updates on your computer. Instead, get notified when there is a new update.
- Install the update only after you have created a full backup of your data. This ensures that you will not lose data in the event of a serious error.
- Before the update, take a look at our CHIP software news to see if there are any problems with the Windows update. For example, in the past, Microsoft sent a second update a few weeks after the update to fix the problems.
