Windows 10: Turn off indexing - how it works
With the indexing of important files, the search should work faster on Windows 10. However, you should switch off the function if the process causes problems. We'll show you how to do this.
Windows 10: Turn off Windows search indexing
If the Windows search is too slow for you, you do not have to deactivate the indexing immediately. In this case, try to adjust the settings first. To do this, open the indexing options with the key combination [Windows] + [R] and the command "control.exe srchadmin.dll". If this does not help, you can deactivate indexing.
- To do this, press the key combination [Windows] + [R] so that the Run dialog opens.
- Enter the command "service.msc" and confirm with [Enter].
- Scroll down a bit in the list of all services and double click on the entry "Windows Search".
- In the "General" tab, select the option "deactivated" from the dropdown menu next to the entry "Start type" (see photo).
- Now click on the "End" button in the "Service Status" section. This ends the ongoing indexing and saves you having to restart the PC.
- Then confirm your changes with "OK" to switch indexing off completely.
