Windows 10: Disable IPv6 - how it works
The IPv6 protocol is intended to supply even more devices on the Internet. However, you can disable it on Windows 10 if you don't want to use the new standard. In this article, we reveal exactly how this works.
Disable IPv6 on Windows 10
The IPv6 protocol is integrated deep into the system in Windows 10: If you want to deactivate it, you have to dive into the Windows registry. For security reasons, make a backup of the registry beforehand. If you feel insecure, you can also use the automatic assistant from our second paragraph.
- All others press the key combination [Windows] + [R], so that the Run dialog opens.
- Enter the "regedit" command there and confirm with [Enter].
- If a user account control warning appears, click "Yes". Then the Windows registry opens.
- In the left column navigate to the entry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Tcpip6 \ Parameters \"
- There, double click on the "DisabledComponents" entry. If this does not exist, click on "Edit"> "New"> "DWORD value (32-bit)" in the menu. Then enter "DisabledComponents" as the name and confirm with [Enter].
- Enter one of the following values in the "Value" field, depending on which functions you want to deactivate. Finally click on "OK" and restart your computer.
- "Type 0x11": Deactivates all IPv6 components with the exception of the IPv6 loopback interface. Use this value if you are not sure which features you still need.
- "Type 0x20": Windows IPv4 over IPv6 is now preferred.
- "Type 0x10": How to disable IPv6 on all non-tunnel interfaces such as LAN and point-to-point protocol interfaces.
- "Type 0 x 01": How to switch off IPv6 on all tunnel interfaces.
Windows 10: Disable IPv6 via script
Deactivating IPv6 is much easier with a free script from Microsoft. Download this on the official Windows website in the section "Deactivating IPv6" and run the program. IPv6 is now completely deactivated.
