Windows 10: set media player as default - so it'll work
Unlike in previous versions, Windows 10 uses the video app to play media by default. In this article, we explain how to set the old media player as the default again.
Windows 10: Set old media player as default
The apps play a big role in Windows 10. For this reason, music files are played by default with the Groove app and videos with the "Movies & TV" app. However, you can change this in the settings and set the familiar Windows Media Player as the default.
- To do this, open the Control Panel on your computer.
- There, click on the "Programs" category and then select the "Change standard programs" entry.
- A new window opens with all of your installed apps and programs. Select the "Windows Media Player" in the left column.
- Then click on "Select standards for this program" on the right.
- Check this box for all file types that you want to open with Windows Media Player in the future. Alternatively, you can also activate all entries by ticking "Select all".
- Finally, confirm your selection with "Save" and "OK".
On the next page we will show you how you can also play MKV files with Windows Media Player.
