Several monitors provide a better overview on the desktop. In this practical tip, we explain how to set up multiple screens in Windows 10 to enlarge your work space.
Windows 10: Connect multiple monitors
The first thing to do is to connect multiple monitors to your computer.
- Depending on which monitors and which graphics card you are using, you will need appropriate cables.
- Current monitors can often be connected to your computer using an HDMI cable. HDMI not only offers you the best possible picture quality, but also transmits the sound of your computer if the monitor has speakers.
- Somewhat older models mostly use DVI or VGA inputs. These do not transmit any sound and may offer a poorer picture.
- We will explain the difference between the connections in a separate practical tip.

After you have connected the screens, you can still configure the display settings.
- To do this, right-click on the desktop and select the "Display Settings" item.
- You can now choose a suitable setting under "Multiple displays". We present the individual options below.
- "Duplicate this display": This setting shows the same on both screens.
- "Extend this display": This setting ensures that your desktop spans both monitors and you can move the windows freely.
- Under "Advanced display settings" you can also set the resolution for both monitors and access other functions such as color calibration.
- If you only want to choose between "expand" and "duplicate", you can also use the key combination [Win] + [P].
