Windows 10: Prevent restart after update - how it works
On Windows 10, you can download new updates at any time, but you cannot prevent a restart after installation. But with a little trick it works. We'll show you exactly how to do this.
Prevent restart after updates on Windows 10
Microsoft wants you and your PC to stay up to date and therefore distributes all updates automatically. Unfortunately, there has been no satisfactory solution for the associated restarts since the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. However, the following two tips can curb annoying reboots.
- Open the start menu and click on the gear icon in the lower left
- If you switch to the "Update and security" category, you will find the "Change usage time" item there.
- Here you can specify a period of up to 12 hours, during which no restart is guaranteed.
- The other way round, under "Restart options" you can set a time period when you are ready to restart.
- So you can not completely prevent the restart, but you can control it a little.
Windows 10: Install updates without a direct restart
Note: The Anniversary Update for Windows 10 has been available since July 2016. The following guide only works on older versions of Windows 10.
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "regedit" here and confirm with "OK". Then the registry editor starts.
- Now navigate to the path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ WindowsUpdate \ AU" on the left-hand side.
- If the last or the penultimate key does not exist, right-click on a free area and select a "key" under "New" and add it yourself.
- Now click again in the "AU" key on a free area and under "New" select the entry "DWORD value (32-bit)".
- Enter the name "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers" and open the value with a double click.
- Set the "Value" to "1" and close the window with "OK". After the next restart, Windows does not shut down directly after updates.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to restore Windows 10 without a CD.
