If you forgot the password for your user in Windows 10, you can simply reset it. We show you how this works in this guide.
Windows 10: reset forgotten password
If you use a Microsoft account for Windows login, you can easily reset your password. If you use the classic Windows account, you have to follow the somewhat more extensive instructions in the next paragraph.
- After unsuccessful login, simply click on "Forgot your password" below the input field.
- Select the desired email address or enter an alternative email address.
- You will then receive a code by email. If you enter this on the PC, you can change the password and log in again.
- Tip: If the Windows account is not an administrator, you can change the Windows password from an administrator account using the CMD.
Forgot password for Windows 10 login
- Download the free tool "Offline NT Password & Registry Editor" and open the ZIP file.
- Extract the ISO file it contains and burn it to a CD or USB stick. The programs CDBurnerXP and UNetbootin are recommended for this.
- Turn off your computer and restart it. In order to boot from the USB stick or CD, you may have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS.
- If the tool was started from the CD or from a USB stick, first select the partition on which Windows 10 is installed. Then confirm the path of the registry.
- Now select the option "1 - Password reset with space as delimeter" and then "1 - Edit user data and passwords".
- Decide on your user under Windows 10 and select the option "1 - Clear (blank) user password".
- By entering [!] And [Q] the process is carried out and confirmed. Finally press [Z] and restart Windows without the CD or the USB stick.
- You can then log in without a password. For security reasons, however, you should assign a new password after logging in.
- Note: You do not have to change the boot order again. If the start of Windows 10 takes a little longer from now on, you should check the BIOS again.
