If Windows 10 reports "Fatal error" and Start and Cortana no longer work, you should only click on "Log out now". However, this does not help, because the next time you log on, the warning will appear again. Instead, you have to do it differently to escape this loop.
Fix fatal error in Windows 10
If you receive the "Fatal Error" error message in Windows 10, you must not click "Sign Out Now" to troubleshoot the problem. If you clicked on it anyway, log in again first.
- Then press the [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del] keys and hold down the [Shift] key for the further steps.
- In the overview, you must now click on the power button at the bottom right.
- Then a context menu opens from which you select "Shutdown".
- Your computer will now shut down. Then wait a few seconds and restart it.
- If you log in as usual with your login data, the error message no longer appears.
Alternative solution: update Dropbox
Some CHIP readers report that they still cannot solve this problem. This is often due to an old Dropbox script:
- To fix the problem, you need to install the latest version of Dropbox.
- The first thing you need to do is uninstall Dropbox. We show the individual steps in the video.
- As soon as you have uninstalled Dropbox and restarted the computer, the error no longer appears.
- If you want to continue using Dropbox, download the latest Dropbox version from the CHIP download portal.
- So that the error does not occur again in the future, we recommend using a different cloud storage. We recommend Google Drive, which provides you with 15 GB of free storage space.
