Windows 10: Start menu no longer works - you can do that
If the start menu no longer works in Windows 10, the computer is much more uncomfortable to use. In this practical tip, we explain which options are available to repair the start menu.
Windows 10: Start menu no longer works - restart Explorer
There may be problems with Windows Explorer - a restart can help:
- To do this, start the Task Manager with the key combination [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [ESC].
- Click on the "More Details" entry below to display additional processes.
- Then search for "Windows Explorer" in the list and right-click on the entry.
- Select the "Restart" option from the context menu.
Start menu no longer works - repair via PowerShell
Alternatively, you can try to repair the start menu as follows:
- Start the Task Manager as described above and end the "Windows Explorer" process.
- To do this, right-click on the name and select "End Task".
- Then click on "File"> "Run new task" and enter "Powershell". Confirm with [Enter].
- Enter the following command in the Powershell: Get-appxpackage -all * shellexperience * -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($ _. Installlocation + “\ appxmetadata \ appxbundlemanifest.xml”)}
- Wait for the process to finish and then enter this command: Get-AppxPackage | % {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$ ($ _. InstallLocation) \ AppxManifest.xml" -verbose}
- Then choose File> Run New Task again, and then type explorer.exe in the box. With "OK" the Explorer is started again and the start menu should work again.
Start menu no longer works - More tips
- Some virus scanners or firewalls can block the activities of the start menu.
- For this reason, switch off both programs once as a test. But don't forget to switch it on again afterwards.
- Switching from tablet to normal mode can often cause problems. To do this, click on the notification icon in the lower right corner and select "Tablet mode" twice.
- In many cases it also helps if you restart the PC once.
