Sometimes it can happen that the Windows 10 start menu no longer works. In such a case, there are several ways to solve the problem. We have summarized several options for you.
Start menu in Windows 10 does not work: restart Windows
- In many cases it is sufficient to restart Windows once. To do this, switch to the desktop and press the key combination [ALT] + [F4]. Now select "Restart" and click "OK".
Repair start menu via PowerShell

Open the Task Manager by right-clicking on the taskbar.
Go to "File - Create New Task" and type in "powershell". Don't forget to activate the administrator rights.
Enter the command "sfc / scannow" in the powershell. If an error is found, enter the command "DISM / Online / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth".
If the restart did not bring the desired success, you also have the option to repair the start menu via Windows PowerShell:
- Open the Task Manager by right-clicking on the Windows taskbar.
- Click on "More Details" at the bottom left if the tabs are not visible in the Task Manager window.
- Now click on "File - Create new task" in the opened window. Now type in the command "powershell" and activate the item "Create this task with administrator rights".
- Now enter the command "sfc / scannow" in the opened Powershell window. As a result, Windows checks the system files itself.
- If Windows finds an error, you may be lucky to fix it by entering the command "DISM / Online / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth". After a restart everything should work again.
- If Windows does not find any problems, you will need to look elsewhere for the solution.
Repair the start menu with a new user account
Another way to restore the defective start menu is to set up a second user account. To do this, create a new user account.
- To do this, open the PowerShell with administrator rights again, as described in the tip above.
- Now enter the command "net user newusername newpassword / add". "New user name" and "New password" must of course be replaced by personal access data.
- Now restart the PC and log in with the newly created account. Now check whether the start menu works.
- If this is the case, you need to transfer the user data from the old account to your new one. This is particularly convenient if you were logged into the old account with a Microsoft account.
- To transfer the data from the Microsoft account, go to Windows Settings and then "Accounts". Tap "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead"
- Now Windows 10 should automatically transfer all important settings and data.
- If you only have an offline account and are not ready to create a Microsoft account, you either have to transfer the data manually or use a backup program.
Reset Windows 10
If nothing works, you should reset Windows 10. You can either keep your personal information on reset or remove everything. With both options, the start menu should function properly after reinstallation.
