Windows 10: change start sound - how it works
You can easily change the start sound in Windows 10 with just a few clicks, but you have to activate this option first. In this guide we show you the individual steps.
Update: Change start sound in Windows 10
Windows 10 is constantly being adapted behind the scenes. The following "Step 1" no longer works under newer Windows versions. Instead, follow the instructions in this paragraph.
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "regedit" here and confirm with "OK". Now the registry editor starts.
- Navigate here to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Authentication \ LogonUI \ BootAnimation
- Double-click the "DisableStartupSound" entry on the right and change the value from "1" to "0".
- Close the window with "OK" and restart Windows 10. You should then hear the start sound, which you can change in step 2.
Step 1: release start sound on Windows 10
The different sounds can be easily changed under Windows 10, but the start sound is not listed. To do this, you must first activate the start sound:
- Press the [Windows] and [R] keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "regedit" here and confirm with "OK". Now the registry editor starts.
- Navigate here to the following path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ AppEvents \ EventLabels \ SystemExit
- Double-click the "ExcludeFromCPL" key on the right.
- Change the value from 1 to 0 and close the window with "OK".
- Repeat the step for the WindowsLogon folder. If you wish, you can also release the sounds for "WindowsLogoff" and "WindowsUnlock".
Step 2: change start sound on Windows 10
Note: If no sound can be heard even after following these instructions, this may be due to the quick start of Windows 10. The start sound is then simply skipped. Here we show you how to disable Windows 10 quick start.
- Open the Control Panel and select the category "Hardware and Sound".
- Click on the "Sound" item and switch to the "Sounds" tab at the top.
- Now activate the "Play Windows start sound" option.
- Now select the item "Windows login" at the top of the list.
- You can now insert your own sound in WAV format using the "Browse" button. You can also convert MP3 and video files to WAV with the free FormatFactory tool.
- Click the "OK" button and restart your computer to test the sound.
