Windows 10: Install Technical Preview - you have to consider that
If you want to install the Windows 10 Technical Preview, there are a few things to consider. We will show you what is important.
Install Windows 10: virtual machine or correct?
- You should generally install the preview of Windows 10 in a virtual machine. Even if the operating system receives constant updates, it is not yet suitable for productive use.
- Even installing anti-virus software caused Windows to crash in the test. Even complex tasks sometimes cause the system to collapse.
- If you have an old PC at your disposal, this is perfect for a first test of Windows 10. Even on somewhat dusty devices, Windows 10 usually runs faster than in the virtual machine.
Install windows 10: 32 or 64 bit?
- The 32-bit version is sufficient for testing. It is highly recommended in the virtual machine because your computer must share its memory with the virtual machine.
- If you install Windows 10 correctly on a computer, you can also use the 64-bit version. However, if you are not working productively with the system, this will not bring you any advantages.
- The Windows 10 Technical Preview 32-bit is around 3 GB, the Windows 10 Technical Preview 64-bit around 4 GB.
Possibility 1: Install Windows 10 in the virtual machine
- The free VirtualBox is particularly suitable for installation in a virtual machine. Instructions for installation can be found in this practical tip.
- In the virtual machine, you have the option to set the storage space for Windows 10. Select at least 15 GB here. If you would also like to install a few programs, you should also take these into account.
- Note: If VirtualBox refuses to start the installation, go to the "System" category in the settings and deactivate the "Activate nested paging" option under the "Acceleration" tab.
Option 2: Install Windows 10 as the correct operating system
- If you install Windows 10 permanently on your computer, you must first create a new partition under Windows. If this does not happen, your current version of Windows will be lost.
- Extract the contents of the downloaded installation to either an external hard drive or a USB stick. Alternatively, you can burn the ISO file to a DVD.
- If you create a new partition for Windows 10, it should have enough space. After installing Windows 10, the hard drive is already filled with at least 12 GB.
Setting up Windows 10 - you should pay attention to this
- The installation and setup of Windows 10 is no different from that of its predecessors. After installation, Windows will guide you through the setup.
- There you can either accept the default options from Microsoft or protect your data by deactivating some functions.
- At least in the preview of Windows 10, a Microsoft account is mandatory. If you want to set up your computer with a classic account, simply disconnect from the Internet before or after installation. Windows automatically detects the missing connection and offers you a local account.
