Use Windows 10 and Windows 8 in parallel - so it'll work
If you want to use Windows 10 and 8 in parallel, this is generally possible - in many cases, however, only with a second Windows license. We'll show you how to install both operating systems.
Install Windows 8 and 10 in parallel - is that possible?
To get Windows 10, you first need to upgrade your system from Windows 7 or 8 / 8.1 to Windows 10. The product key for Windows 10 is only activated after an upgrade.
- If you upgrade from Windows 8 to 10, the Windows 8 product key is also valid for Windows 10. With this key you can install both versions at any time. However, there is a catch: you can only activate one operating system at a time. Parallel use is not permitted.
- If you now want to use Windows 8 and 10 in parallel, you need an additional Windows license. Do not update Windows 8 to Windows 10, but use an existing Windows 7 installation. It is also possible to buy Windows 7, the simplest version is now available for less than 20 euros.
- If you want to use Windows 8 and 10 productively on your computer, you should install the operating systems on two different partitions. If you rarely use the second system and for simple purposes, an installation in a virtual machine is usually also worthwhile. We explain both options in the following paragraphs.
Use Windows 8 and 10 on two partitions
- If you want to use both operating systems productively on your computer, it is worth installing on two different partitions. When you start your computer, you always have the choice between the two systems.
- To do this, you need to create a second hard drive partition. The storage space should be at least 30 GB. Depending on the usage, you can schedule additional storage space according to your needs.
- Once you have created the second partition, you can then start installing the second operating system. You will be asked for the desired partition during installation, simply select the new partition here.
Use Windows 8 or 10 in a virtual machine
- If you only want to use the second operating system for test purposes or in very rare cases, installation in a virtual machine may also be sufficient. The operating system is started in software so that both systems can be used simultaneously.
- Note, however, that when used simultaneously, the systems share resources and both systems run a little slower. Here you will find instructions for installing Windows 8/10 in the VirtualBox.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to start Windows 10 without a login.
