Windows 10 update: activate full version
- A full version of Windows 10 is installed like any other Windows and activated with the enclosed key.
- If you bought Windows 10 as part of new hardware, no key input is usually required when installing Windows 10. Windows 10 pulls the key from the BIOS or the UEFI firmware.
Activate Windows 10 Update
Most users will first get to Windows 10 via the free update from Windows 7 or 8.1.
- The activation is a little different here. To activate Windows 10, you need a valid Windows key from the previous versions mentioned.
- From a running Windows 7 or 8.1 with all updates, you have to initiate the update to Windows 10. If you have not noted the key for Windows 7 or 8.1 anywhere, you can read it out and save it using special programs such as the Windows Product Key Viewer.
- You don't have to enter the key anywhere, but you may want to install Windodws 7 or 8.1 again later. So keep the key.
Check Windows 10 activation
In most cases, the Windows 10 update runs cleanly. Technically there is not much to complain about. However, many users are amazed when they look and notice that Windows 10 is not activated at all.
- To check whether your Windows 10 is activated, open the command line as administrator.
- To do this, navigate to the "C: \ Windows \ System32" folder, locate the cmd.exe file, right-click and select "Run as administrator".
- Type the command "slmgr / xpr" and press Enter. A small window opens and informs you about the activation status and which version of Windows you have.
